It's hard to believe that the school year is starting again! My name is Heather Weiss, and I am so blessed to be your child's kindergarten teacher this year. This is my 6th year of teaching and also my 6th year on staff here at the A-rated Reading Edge Academy. I have a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Central Florida (Go Knights!) and an M.A. in Elementary Education from UCF. I am currently persuing my National Board Certification in Early/Middle Childhood Literacy. When I am not busy lesson planning or working on my National Board portfolio, you can find me enjoying my two daughters -- Eliana and Tessa, spending time with my husband, crafting, cooking/baking, or at the beach with my family and friends.
I anticipate a very busy and enriching school year with your child. This year, Florida has implemented a new set of standards called the Common Core. I will be providing information of the Common Core standards for Kindergarten as we go through the school year. We will be working extremely hard this year, and you will be amazed at the progress you see throughout the school year. I have high expectations for all of my students and hope that you will encourage your student at home by participating in all activities (i.e. homework, take home bags, family activities, volunteer hours, etc.). I highly encourage parental involvement as it enhances your student's educational experience and keeps you well-informed to what's happening in our classroom and our school. Remember, Reading Edge Academy has a requirement of thirty hours of volunteering.

- Folder and planner: All students in my class will have a folder and a planner. Information about these two items will be found inside the front cover of the planner.
- Absences: If your child is going to be absent from school, please call the school office at 386-668-8911. Please keep absences to a minimum as they hinder your child's success.
- Birthdays: You are welcome to send in treats for your child's birthday. Please make sure that you have enough to serve 18 students. It is helpful if I know in advance that you are sending them so I can accommodate time for treats into our schedule. Thanks!
- Breakfast: Please make sure your child has eaten breakfast in the morning prior to coming to class. Breakfast is served in our cafeteria until 7:30am. Please refer to the REA website for what will be served each day.
- Lunch: Children may purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home. Hot lunch, salad, and a peanut butter & jelly sandwich are offered by our cafeteria. It is best if lunch is paid at lease 1 week in advance. If your child will be bringing lunch from home, please send it in a soft-sided lunch with their names clearly marked. Please send only healthy lunches. The following items are not permitted: soda (of any kind), cans/glass packaging, any package your child cannot open, candy, gum, or silverware (plastic fork and spoon are permitted -- no knives!).
- Notes to the Teacher: If you ever need to send me a note, please write it directly on your child's planner or put it in the pocket of your child's folder. I will communicate with you in the same way, and occasionally through email and phone calls. Always discuss a change in transportation with your child, and alert them to the note and where you put it so that they are aware. I do not have the time to search through each child's backpack every day.
- Snack time/recess time: We will have 10 minutes each morning to eat a snack and enjoy the outdoors. This is a time where they can relieve their wiggles, engage in social activity, and play. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather. We will always go outside weather-permitting.
- Behavior management: Please read about our behavior management system. The document is located in the next post and will be available in paper form during Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 17th.
- Dress Code: We wear uniforms at Reading Edge Academy. All students must wear the burgundy knit shirt with the Reading Edge Academy logo as well as uniform-style navy blue bottoms (these can be slacks, jumpers, skirts, shorts, capris, or skorts). A brown or black belt is to be worn if pants do not stay at the waist. No cargo pants, carpenter pants, or other trendy clothing. Solid navy or white socks which cover the ankles (no stripes). Plain, solid hunter green, maroon, or navy sweaters or sweatshirts may be worn in school for warmth. In cold weather, any color jacket may be worn outdoors only. Both boys and girls must wear white or black athletic shoes trimmed in no more than one other color. - Newsletters: Please take the time to read all newsletters/other information that is sent home. Also, you can check the website (www.readingedgeacademy.org) for upcoming events and announcements that might not be sent home in paper form.
- Extra set of clothing: Always have an extra set of clothing in your child's backpack. It does not have to be a set of uniform clothing, but must include socks and underwear. This is kindergarten, and accidents can and do happen.
- Please leave all toys and jewelry at home. This includes watches, necklaces that are not religious in nature, bracelets, and rings. These items can be very disruptive to learning time and may upset your child if they are lost or broken.
